Juniors Softball is designed for girls 13-14. This is a competitive division geared towards preparing players for High School fastpitch softball. Kids pitch at this level with inning counts strictly adhered to. One home plate Umpire is used at this level.
Teams
Rather than formal tryouts, coaches will divide players into teams following our pre-season clinic. Our goal is to supply each team with an even amount of pitchers, catchers, and talent. Parent requests for specific coaches, or to be on specific teams, will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and are not guaranteed in order to ensure team equality and competitiveness.
Season
We will officially kick off the Softball season with a Mini-Clinic during the week of Spring Break. As space becomes available and weather allows, we plan to start holding open practices. Register early so you can be notified of pre-pre-season practices!
Games begin in late April and typically end the first week of June. Juniors usually practice or have a game each weekday throughout the season, weather permitting. At the Juniors level, there are usually 2 or 3 games per week.
Location
Practices and home games are held at Travers Park in Sandpoint. Interleague games are played with teams from outside the Sandpoint area (i.e. Priest River, Timberlake, Rathdrum). We will be hosting and traveling to games with these communities. The year's schedule can only be determined once each community has completed their signup process. The interleague game schedule isn't normally available until late April.
Games
Games are six innings unless called due to darkness, weather, or the 10-run rule. Weekday games against other communities usually start at 5:30 p.m. Games between two of our local teams may start earlier. Interleague games are often played as doubleheaders Saturday mornings, in an effort to limit travel on school nights. We generally schedule two to three games per week, and as many away games as home games against interleague. We target at least 12 games per team, which is the minimum requirement for All-Stars eligibility.
Equipment
Sandpoint Little League buttoned jersey shirts and visors are provided to players by the league. SLL also provides teams with helmets, bats and catching equipment. Cleats are required, and players need to have their own ball gloves. Baseball/Softball pants and sliding shorts are recommended. Balls are the full-size (usually yellow) 12” softballs.
All-Stars
All-Stars extends the season into the summer months. In our first year at the tournament, our Juniors All-Star team won the 2012 State Championship! Whether or not we have a Majors All-Stars team this year will be determined by coach and player interest and availability. More information will be made available when practical. Stay tuned!
